Tottenham delivered one of the finest victories in the club’s history as Dele Alli scored twice in a 3-1 demolition of Real Madrid.
The London club sealed qualification for the Champions League knockout stages in the most dramatic style, with two goals from Alli and one from Denmark’s Christian Eriksen ensuring a memorable night at Wembley.
Spurs’ fans were even cheering their side’s every pass with 20 minutes left as Mauricio Pochettino’s men threatened to humiliate their star-studded opponents before Cristiano Ronaldo added a late consolation.
Victory means Tottenham move top of Group H on 10 points, three ahead of their Spanish opponents with two games remaining.
The last time Spurs overcame European champions was in 2010 when Gareth Bale-inspired them to beat Inter Milan by the same scoreline, but this was nothing if not a team performance.
Spurs could have won by more goals according to Eriksen.
“If we had more composure we could have got more,” he said on BT Sport.
“We take this on to the next stage. We’re happy to be through.”
Eriksen’s team-mate Alli said that Spurs knew they would have chances against the European champions.
“It was a fantastic display by us. We knew if we stuck to our game plan and were solid at back then we’d get chances.
“We’re very happy with the result. We don’t want to just compete with these teams, we want to beat them.
“I’m happy to get two goals but more importantly it was a win,” Alli added.
