Legendary cinematographer, Tunde Kelani, has celebrated veteran actress, Idowu Philips, popularly known as Iya Rainbow, calling her a “hero of Yoruba theatre.”
The 71-year-old filmmaker talked about her in an Instagram post on Monday.
“Celebrate Mama Rainbow with TK. Idowu Phillips is one of our Heroes of Yoruba Travelling Theatre,” he wrote.
More recently, Iya Rainbow has been involved in a series of advertorial projects with telecommunication giants, Airtel.
She was born on October 16, 1942.
Her stage name Iya Rainbow stems from ‘Osumare,’ the Yoruba word for rainbow, the name of the theatre group of legendary playwright, Sir Hubert Ogunde, who died in 1990.
She worked as a certified nurse in general hospitals in Nigeria for several years and occasionally acted in theatre before venturing into full-time acting.
