Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has been honoured with an honourary doctorate by Smart Island University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The recognition comes in appreciation of her humanitarian work and pioneering efforts in diaspora development, according to a statement issued on Monday.

The award was presented by the university’s registrar, Dr Mohammed Dhaidan Al-Mutairi, who praised Dabiri-Erewa’s commitment and resilience in advancing diaspora affairs.

He noted that the NiDCOM boss was selected for the honour due to her “giant strides in humanitarian and diaspora engagements,” and revealed that nearly 90 Nigerian students are currently enrolled in various programmes at the university.

Al-Mutairi also hinted at plans by the institution to deepen its relationship with Nigeria, including a proposal to establish a campus in the country.

In her response, Dabiri-Erewa thanked the institution for the honour and expressed her appreciation to the Association of Nigerians in Saudi Arabia for their continued efforts in promoting a positive image of the country.

A date for the formal conferment of the doctorate will be announced later in the year.
