Abike Dabiri mourns former colleague Joy Osiagwu

Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa has expressed sorrow over the death of her former colleague at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Joy Osiagwu.

QEDNG learnt that Canada-based Mrs Osiagwu died last Friday in Arewa Hospital, Jabi after a brief illness.

Osiagwu was a news anchor, reporter, producer, videographer, film editor and media consultant with over two decades of full-time practice in the broadcast industry in Nigeria and North America.

She was media adviser/consultant to the immediate past Nigeia high commissioner to Canada Ambassador Adeyinka Asekun.

Mourning the broadcaster, Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said in an Instagram post on Sunday: “RIP, dear Joy Osiagwu. Great friend. Great colleague. May the Almighty God give your family and numerous loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

Osiagwu covered activities of the Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa, Canada and the Nigeria Mission to the United Nations in New York for a decade, including the United Nations rotational presidency of the Security Council during the tenure of the former permanent representative of Nigeria to the UN Mission Professor Joy Ogwu in July 2010, October 2011 and August 2015 for the NTA.

Apart from covering the United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Marrakech, Morocco in 2018, Osiagwu covered the election process and emergence of the 74th president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Professor Tijjani Bande in June 2019 at the UN in New York.

She obtained a master in business administration and media leadership from the University of Cumbria in the United Kingdom. She also had a post-graduate diploma in broadcast performing arts from the Columbia Academy, Vancouver British Columbia Canada. She obtained a bachelor of arts degree in drama, majoring in theatre for development (TFD) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Osiagwu worked at NTA for 23 years and retired voluntarily in September 2019.

She celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary in September 2024.

A service of songs will be held for her in Ottawa on Wednesday, November 13.

Joy Osiagwu is survived by husband Ken Osiagwu and children all of whom QEDNG learnt are in Canada.
