Chairman/chief executive officer of Nigerian Diaspora Commission, (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has promised to follow up on the case of a Nigerian woman reportedly strangulated in South Africa.
Former chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, had on Friday brought Mrs Dabiri-Erewa’s attention via a tweet to a letter granting permission to export the deceased’s remains back to Nigeria.
In the letter, the deceased, Elizabeth Ndubuisi, died on June 13 at Kempton Park, Gauteng Province.
Ndubuisi was said to be the Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN). She was, according to Odinkalu, in South Africa to attend the conference of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO). She was later found dead in her hotel room.
The letter said Ndubuisi died of unnatural causes consistent with strangulation.
“U may wish to look at this document, ma’am. It wasn’t just death by any “unnatural cause”; it was “unnatural cause consistent with strangulation”. Just imagine – as u work this case – the last moments of a mother in her room by herself having life manually wrung out of her….,” Odinkalu said.
In response, Dabiri-Erewa said she could not make any deductions but that she would ensure that the truth is revealed.
“I’m sure all will be unraveled. Her family fully involved with an officer assigned to the case I cannot make any deductions but we will ensure the truth is revealed,” she said.
