The family of the late dental surgeon Chinelo Megafu has paid tributes to her one year after her death.
Megafu was killed in the Abuja-Kaduna train attack on March 28, 2022. She was 29 years old.
The surgeon had taken to Twitter on the day the train was attacked by terrorists to announce that she was on board and had been shot saying, “I’m on the train. I have been shot, please pray for me.”
However, she was trolled and accused of clout-chasing with the incident. Some Twitter users asked her if she was dead yet.
On Tuesday, one year after her death, her family in a tribute signed by her father Ifeanyi Megafu said the country failed her and her generation.
He wrote, “On that fateful evening in your agony as life ebbed away, God’s spirit prompted you to tell the world the real truth as you prayed: ‘I’m on the train. I have been shot, please pray for me.’
“That act of courage immediately changed the narrative, putting paid to the usual vapid, sinful, lie and denial strewn statements that were checkmated. You became the poster face of a beleaguered and slipping nation. A nation you served so much but prematurely consumed you. The country failed you and your generation.”
Megafu was buried in April 2022 at Ebony Private Cemetery, Ikoyi, Lagos after a funeral service at Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Obanikoro.
She graduated from the University of Port Harcourt in 2016, did her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme at the Kaduna State Dental Centre and worked with St Gerrard’s Hospital, Kakuri.
