The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has said it would charge Shuaibu Yushau, a middle-aged man who climbed a high broadband mast at Aso Radio in Katampe, Abuja, to protest economic hardship, with attempted suicide.
Yushau caused a stir when he climbed the mast on Monday, leaving a note on the floor that he would only descend from the mast if economic hardship, insecurity, and the out-of-school children crisis are addressed.
He later descended following plea from acting general manager of the FCT emergency management department Florence Wenegieme.
Vanguard reports that Yushau has been sent for mental evaluation at the Social Development Secretariat (SDS).
Spokesman of FCT Police Command Josephine Adeh said on Tuesday that Yushau will be charged to court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement if found to be mentally stable after the evaluation.
She said, “The suspect, if found to be mentally stable after the test, will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement contrary to sections 231, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act.”
FCT commissioner of police Benneth Igweh urged residents to be law-abiding while pushing for their voices to be heard, stressing that the police will not be cajoled into allowing the breakdown of law and order.
According to Section 327 of the Criminal Code, anyone who attempts suicide in Nigeria is guilty of a misdemeanour and can be imprisoned for one year.
