Nigerians condemn police raid on women in Abuja nightclubs

Police

Nigerians have condemned the recent raid by policemen on several nightclubs in Abuja where about 70 women were arrested.

The women, who police suspect to be sex workers, were arrested and detained at Utako Police Station on April 27.

Since the arrest was made, there have been allegations of rape and assault by policemen on the women.

Head of the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Abayomi Shogunle, on Tuesday, justified the clampdown.

Among the reasons he gave, Shogunle claimed that medical practitioners say prostitutes are spreading Human-Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Nigerians on Twitter have appeared displeased by the raids, saying that innocent women might have been part of those picked up by policemen.
