Contrary to widespread media reports, Pastor Enoch Adeboye is neither retiring nor stepping down as General Overseer (GO) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
The 74-year-old said at the at the annual ministers thanksgiving held at the Redemption Camp on Saturday that the church in Nigeria will now to be led by Pastor Joseph Obayemi.
That pronouncement was generally interpreted to mean Adeboye had relinquished his position as head of one of the biggest Pentecostal movements in the world.
A statement signed by Leke Adeboye, the clergyman’s last son and personal assistant, later clarified that while Obayemi becomes GO in Nigeria, the senior Adeboye is GO of RCCG worldwide.
Until his elevation, Obayemi was assistant general overseer (finance).
Pastor Funsho Odesola, who was hitherto assistant general overseer (admin), is now general secretary of RCCG Nigeria.
Pastor Joseph Adeyokunu, former financial controller, becomes treasurer of RCCG Nigeria.
The reshuffle, according to the church, is sequel to new legal requirements which stipulate that heads of non-profit organisations like churches, mosques and civil society groups in Nigeria have a maximum period of 20 years to lead.
They are not permitted to hand over to their families upon retirement.
Adeboye remains spiritual leader and global missioner of RCCG.
The man fondly called Daddy GO took over the leadership of RCCG in 1981 following the death of founder, Rev Josiah Akindayomi.
He has led the church for 35 years.
