The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday presented the certificate of return to Osun State Governor-elect Ademola Adeleke 72 hours after he was declared winner.
INEC national commissioner in charge of Osun, Ogun and Oyo Prof. Kunle Ajayi presented the certificate.
Deputy Governor-elect Kola Adewusi also got his certificate of return.
Adeleke, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner of the July 16 poll. He got 403, 371 votes to defeat incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress who polled 375, 027 votes.
The PDP won 17 of the 30 local government areas of the state, while the APC won 13.
In his acceptance speech after receiving the certificate at a brief ceremony held at Osun INEC head office in Osogbo, Adeleke dedicated his victory at the poll to the memory of his late elder brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, and the people of Osun state.
Adeleke’s nephew Davido had on Tuesday claimed INEC was delaying in giving his uncle the certificate.
But the commission said the law permits it to give the winner of an election the certificate within 14 days.
