Weightlifter Adijat Olarinoye on Saturday won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The 23-year-old made a new Commonwealth Games record with a total of 203kg.
Olarinoye’s effort puts Nigeria on ninth on the medals table which Australia leads with 13 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.
New Zealand occupies the second position having won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
England is third with five gold medals, 12 silver and four bronze.
Canada and Scotland complete the top five as they sit fourth and fifth respectively.
Tobi Amusan, 25, will be hoping to add to Nigeria’s medal haul when she takes to the field for the 100m hurdles.
Amusan set a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals of the World Athletics Championships held recently in Oregon, United States.
At the Commonwealth Games on Sunday, Edidiong Umoafia will be in action in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event at NEC Hall 1 while Team Nigeria will face Malaysia in the quarter-final of the men’s team table tennis held at NEC Hall 3.
Nigeria will stand a chance of winning a medal in the over 71-75kg of the boxing event with Adeyinka Benson set to face Ghana’s Abubakari Quartey in the round of 16.
Completing the action for the day, Rafiatu Lawal will be competing in the women’s 59kg weightlifting at NEC Hall 1.
