Aisha Achimugu: From lavish 50th birthday party in Grenada to EFCC wanted list

Often celebrated for her extravagant lifestyle and high-profile connections, businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu is now in the spotlight for a different reason. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared her wanted over alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering.

EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale announced the development in a statement, urging the public to provide information on Achimugu’s whereabouts. According to the EFCC, Achimugu, 51, is from Kogi State, with her last known address in Maitama, Abuja.

The case against Achimugu reportedly involves a high-profile investment scam. She was summoned to appear at the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office on March 5, 2025, but instead of honouring the invitation, Achimugu allegedly left Nigeria. This prompted the EFCC to secure a court-issued arrest warrant and declare her wanted.

She had earlier embarked on a spirited media campaign to deny she was being investigated by the EFCC.

Her spokesperson identified in syndicated media posts as David Abakpa dismissed an online media report of her arrest as “fake news” and a “sponsored rumour.”

This turn of events contrasts sharply with Achimugu’s public image as a respected entrepreneur and socialite. Known for her flair, she hosted a seven-day celebration for her 50th birthday in Grenada in 2015, attended by prominent figures, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Responding to criticism of the opulence, Achimugu was unapologetic, stating, “I really don’t give a hoot. I’m doing me; I’ve always done me.”

The founder and managing director of Felak Concept Group, Achimugu has received accolades such as Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 by The Sun newspaper. However, she has also faced scrutiny in the past. In 2018, the EFCC linked her to a case of funds diversion and money laundering involving Senate President and former Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Married to the late Sulaiman Achimugu, a former managing director of the Pipeline and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), who passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, Aisha Achimugu now faces the challenge of clearing her name as the EFCC intensifies its investigation.

This dramatic shift from hosting lavish parties to being declared wanted by the EFCC underscores the twists and turns in the life of one of Nigeria’s most talked-about socialites.
