First lady Aisha Buhari on Wednesday called for prayers for Nigeria as the nation grapples with security challenges in the north, rising inflation, unemployment, youth unrest and a myriad of other challenges.
Urging the nation to pray, Mrs Buhari shared a photo of a burning candle on Instagram with a quote from the Holy Quran.
“Sufficient for us is Allah and He is the Best Guardian. The Excellent Protector and the Excellent Helper,” she wrote.
To send home her message, the first lady captioned her post: “#PrayForNigeria.”
Aisha has for some time now been advocating for an end to insecurity especially in the north.
In October, she posted a 22-second music video on her social media platforms showing the images of the heads of security agencies during meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.
Aisha captioned her post “#Achehejamaa” which means “save the people”.
The lyrics of the song were translated to mean, “Baba, please for God’s sake, consider our pleas for help; baba, please defend us; the North is crying, they are killing our people. They are burning our property; baba, please.”
Nigeria’s security chiefs include the Chief of Defence Staff Abayomi Olonisakin, Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu, Chief of Army staff Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff Ibok Ibas, and Chief of Air Staff Sadique Abubakar.
They were all appointed in 2015 except the IGP who was appointed in January 2019 following the retirement of Ibrahim Idris at the age of 60.
Buhari has stuck with the security chiefs despite calls from many to sack them over the rising level of insecurity.
Aisha’s post for her husband to address security challenges came at the time the #EndSARS protest against police brutality was gaining momentum in the south.
The protest soon spread to the north. It was followed by violence after hoodlums hijacked the protest, looting and destroying public and private property.
