First lady Aisha Buhari on Sunday congratulated Morocco on making it to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Morocco defeated Portugal 1-0 on Saturday in the quarter finals courtesy of a late first half goal from Youssef En-Nesyri who also plays as a forward for Sevilla.
The win pushed Morocco to their first semi-final at the World Cup and also Africa’s first ever.
Congratulating the team, Mrs Buhari said in an Instagram post, “Congratulations to the Morocco team. The only African team standing.”
Morocco will now square up against defending champions France after the latter defeated England 2-1 in the second quarter final clash on Saturday.
Muslim nations have been impressive at the World Cup with Saudi Arabia registering a huge 2-1 win over Argentina and Iran beating Wales 2-0 in the group stages, although it was not enough to see both teams make it through to the next round.
Morocco defeated traditional European heavyweights — Belgium, Spain and Portugal — on their way to the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup.
