Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala has apologised for the loss the team suffered in the hands of the Bayana Bayana of South Africa on Tuesday.
The South Africans defeated the nine-time African Champions 4-2 on Tuesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos to emerge champions of the inaugural Aisha Buhari Cup tournament.
However, in a statement released via Instagram on Wednesday, Oshoala promised that she and the team would not let the country down again.
“Yesterday’s defeat still hurts I must confess, it was a disappointment from all of us. As the captain of the team, I’m indeed sorry because we did not fight hard enough. This is a wake-up call and I promise we won’t let our fans and the nation down like this again,” she wrote.
She also thanked the brains behind the tournament including first lady Aisha Buhari, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Air Peace chairman and chief executive officer Allen Onyema who already gifted the Falcons N20 million.
Oshoala also thanked other sponsors such as AITEO and MTN. “Thank you for helping promote Women’s Football in Africa,” she added.
With the tournament over, both sides will now focus on their 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers.
