Co-founder of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) movement Aisha Yesufu has come under intense criticism on social media by some northerners known colloquially as Arewa Twitter over her comments about homosexuality.
Mrs Yesufu, though a Muslim, had tweeted on Monday that she believed everyone should be free to choose their sexuality.
She has also been criticised by the LGBTQ community in Nigeria over her comments that homosexuality has been existent in Nigeria before the coming of the colonialists.
“You do not need anyone liking your choice of sexuality. All you need is being given the right to practise your sexuality.
“Homosexuality was freely practiced in Nigeria for hundreds of years and I witnessed same sex marriages in the 80s. So calm down, it is not a new discovery,” she tweeted.
Her comments have put her in the wrong side of both wings.
