Police in Akwa Ibom have arrested a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for allegedly hacking a man believed to be her boyfriend to death with a machete.
Odume Paschaline was taken into police custody after she was almost lynched by a mob on Sunday.
“She is accused of killing a young guy early this (Sunday) morning at Abak Road. I saw a large crowd gathered at Abak road by Afahaoffot so I ran there and behold I saw this young lady been beaten and stripped totally naked,” a witness wrote in a Facebook post.
The witness said he gathered that the NYSC member was caught trying to jump through the fence of the slain man.
“She’s in our custody and investigation is ongoing,” state police spokesman Odiko Ogbeche-Macdon told TheCable on Monday.
Akwa Ibom NYSC coordinator Julius Amusan described the incident as “sad and unfortunate”.
“The report was brought to us yesterday (Sunday) evening and we contacted the police. It was the police that told us the lady was almost lynched after she hacked her boyfriend to death. We were not there,” he told the online newspaper.
Mr Amusan added that he was disappointed that such incident happened barely a month to the end of her service year.
