The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has arrived in Nigeria from Canada to commence traditional rites ahead of his coronation scheduled for April 5, 2025.
A video of his arrival went viral on Wednesday, showing the monarch dressed in a white blazer, matching white shoes, black pants, and an inner T-shirt, complemented by a black fez cap.
He was received by well-wishers and a group of women singers.
According to reports, the media aide to the monarch, Bode Durojaiye, stated on Monday that the new Alaafin was prepared to begin his traditional rituals as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
“As part of the processes, Alaafin Owoade would visit a number of houses to offer sacrifices, make appeasements, and even sleep over at some of the houses to carry out some night rites.
“After performing the traditional rites at some traditional homes in Oyo town, the new Alaafin will then enter Ipebi (seclusion) for the conclusion of the traditional rites within a secluded part of the Alaafin palace,” Durojaiye said.
With his arrival in Nigeria, all is now set for the new monarch to proceed to Oyo Town, where the traditional processes for his ascension to the throne will commence.
In January, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
According to Oyelade, the appointment followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo.
