Ex-Nigeria international Daniel Amokachi has found himself at the centre of a social media storm over his commentary of the match between Nigeria and Cameroon at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Round of 16 match on Saturday ended 2-0 in favour of the Super Eagles.
Amokachi came under a barrage of attacks on X as netizens expressed their dissatisfaction with his performance behind the microphone.
Since the competition began, AFCON viewers have been critical of Amokachi’s analysis, questioning his relevance in the football broadcasting landscape.
The 51-year-old got dragged while on co-commentary duties for the opening game of the 2023 AFCON as hosts Cote d’Ivoire recorded a comfortable 2-0 win against Guinea Bissau in the first game of the tournament in Group A.
However, the criticisms which the Atlanta 96 Olympic Gold winner was subjected to due to his commentary in the game against the Super Eagles and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon were intense.
Netizens knocked him for what they described as “repetitions”, “dragging the entire country” and giving “beer parlour commentary” among others.
