Police in Anambra have arrested the suspended transition committee chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mbazulike Iloka, over his wife’s controversial death.
Mr Iloka’s wife Chidiebere slumped and died on August 7 after serving him breakfast, Iloka had said.
Mrs Iloka is alleged to have been subjected to domestic violence.
Iloka was suspended by the state government last Friday, pending the conclusion of investigation into his wife’s death.
The local government boss, who is also known as Mba Mba, is being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, Anambra State, under charges of culpable homicide, a source told PUNCH.
Anambra State Police Command spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga called for caution from the public, saying that the case is being investigated as an autopsy will prove the cause of the wife’s death.
“He is in our custody now and we urge the members of the public to be patient as the autopsy shall prove the cause of the wife’s death. Meanwhile, investigation is still ongoing please,” Ikenga said.
Iloka’s arrest followed a petition by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) on Monday and addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.
