Applicant, 31, remanded in prison for allegedly assaulting a police officer

Barnawa Customary Court in Kaduna on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 31-year-old applicant, Adamu Hassan, in prison for allegedly beating a police officer, Sgt. Victoria Danjuma.

Hassan, a resident of Daura Road, Shagari Low-Cost Housing in Kaduna was arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal intimidation and assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Zaradeen Umar, said that on January 29 at about 4:30p.m, a policewoman, Sgt. Victoria Danjuma attached to Barnawa Police Station reported the matter at the same police station.

According to Umar, while the complainant was performing her lawful duty along GT Bank junction in Barnawa road, Kaduna, the defendant came and assaulted her.

He said the defendant in the heat of an argument with the complainant slapped her, beat her and pushed her to the ground.

Umar added that the offences contravened Sections 377 and 239 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State 2017.

The accused, who was not represented in court by any counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Judge, Mr Dauda John ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kaduna Prison.

He adjourned the case till February 14 for further mention.
