Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, on Friday, commiserated with the families of football fans who lost their lives at a viewing centre in Calabar, the state capital.
At least 30 persons were electrocuted while watching the Europa Football League match between Manchester United and Anderlecht at Nyagasang area of Atimbo in Calabar on Thursday night.
A statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Christian Ita, described the loss as tragic.
“The incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state where the precious lives of football lovers have been lost,” the statement reads.
“At this point in time, it is sad to know that the victims lost their lives at a viewing centre where they usually converge, at their leisure time to watch their matches.”
The governor also promised that the state government would investigate the cause of the incident in order to prevent reoccurrence.
