President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, Tuesday emerged new president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Ayokunle, who contested under the platform of the Christian Council of Nigeria, defeated Elder Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement (MCCSW) who represented the Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), with 57 votes to 28.
He will take over from Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, Ayo Oritsejafor, who was elected in 2010, and is the first and only Pentecostal leader to head CAN.
Oritsejafor announced the result of Tuesday’s election at about 2:30 p.m. to a rousing applause of National Executive Council delegates from different parts of the country who had converged at the National Christian Centre in Central Business Centre of Abuja.
According to CAN constitution, Otubu automatically becomes vice president for emerging runner-up in the election.
