Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has called on the Federal Government to initiate the distribution of condoms free of charge across the country.
Tweeting on Monday, the founder of Silverbird Group said the initiative would help Nigeria avert a population explosion.
He also urged the Tinubu administration, through the incoming minister of health, to ensure accessibility to contraceptives.
“In light of the deepening economic challenges that Nigeria faces, which have gravely impacted the middle class and exacerbated poverty levels, it is imperative for the incoming Minister of Health or the federal government to launch a free condom distribution initiative immediately,” Murray-Bruce said.
“Ensuring accessibility to contraceptives is a crucial step in mitigating a potential population explosion, particularly when the financially constrained majority may prioritise basic necessities over family planning methods.
“An ounce of prevention now can avert a looming socio-economic catastrophe in the future.”
In April, former minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed announced the postponement of the 2023 population and housing census to allow the Tinubu administration carry out the exercise.
Last week, the National Population Commission (NPC) said it was ready to conduct the census.
