Founder of Genevieve Magazine Betty Irabor on Thursday revealed that 15 years ago media personality Funmi Iyanda made a life-changing comment to her.
Revealing this on Instagram, Mrs Irabor said, “I remember about 15 years ago when Queen of Talk @funmiiyanda casually said to me, ‘Aunty Betty, you’re so self-depreciating.’
“It was a moment of reality. I felt it.
“Funmi was referencing my column ‘Morning Dew’ where 99.9% of the time I talked down on myself and devalued my worth.
“I was excessively modest. I focused on my weaknesses and never on my strengths.I thought I was being humble.
“You know what? Funmi was right. I really was self-depreciating.
“Believe me, devaluing yourself in the name of modesty is an act of self-sabotage and it is mostly borne out of low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. I have openly shared my stories of battling low self-esteem and how I eventually won the battle.

“I often cringe🙄 when I read my Morning Dew in Genevieve Magazine. I am like ‘Come on, Betty!’
“And now that I have better clarity, I fully understand that many of the challenges that I felt broke me actually moulded & emboldened me. I share these now when I am invited to speak.”
Mrs Irabor also shared a WhatsApp conversation she recently had with Ms Iyanda where she thanked her for the comments.
Iyanda said she had forgotten she made such remark, adding that she probably was used by God to pass a message to her.
“Now that I get it and with my joyful understanding all I see around me is beauty. I want to celebrate my beautiful life more than what my blurred vision (and depression) made me believe.
“The beautiful thing about our lives is that we can always rewrite our stories with a happier twist and a generous sprinkle of radiance,” Irabor added.
