Nollywood actress, Beverly Naya, has shared four pictures of her natural hair after a critic with Twitter username, @Sechermaine, dared her to “take the wig off so we can all see your natural beauty.”
The critic left the comment in reply to a tweet by CNN praising Beverly’s 2019 documentary, Skin, which explores colourism in Africa.
Beverly, 31, not only posted pictures of her natural hair in all its glory, but took the opportunity to educate him on the reason why some black women choose to wear wigs.
“Lmao! Since I was dared. P. S. Some of us wear wigs to protect our natural hair, not to hide it. Nice try,” she informed him.
Beverly said she was inspired to produce the documentary after she was bullied for her skin colour while growing up in the United Kingdom.
“I had crooked teeth and I had really bad eczema. And even though I fixed my teeth and my skin cleared over time, the damage had already been done to my mental state and how I saw myself. So as I got older, I realized that I just didn’t feel beautiful,” she told CNN.
Skin won Best Documentary at the 2020 Africa Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
