Filmmaker Biodun Stephen has deleted an Instagram post after facing criticism for her remarks about “YouTube actors.”
On Thursday on her Instagram page, Biodun encouraged her YouTube audience to explore films featuring lesser-known actors, noting that audiences often gravitate toward projects with popular faces.
She explained her desire to nurture new talent but lamented the reluctance of viewers to support such endeavors.
“Producers need to help new actors, and YouTube is the one place we are able to introduce new faces,” she said.
“We can’t do that if you only click on the films that carry your faves. You need to add to your faves, and the only way is if you give that film a chance.
“I want to build new stars, but I can’t do that if you don’t watch my films because business must thrive, after all.”
However, her initial post included a controversial comment about “YouTube actors,” where she appeared to criticise some performers.
She wrote, “Youtube Actors… Please breathe, inhale… exhale… Don’t suffocate us. Usually not one to do this but guys… calm down. These figures are no longer funny.”
The statement sparked reactions from fans and colleagues, including actor Timini Egbuson, who countered: “What’s a YouTube actor? An actor is an actor.”
Following the backlash, Biodun clarified that her intentions were misunderstood and deleted the post.
Biodun Stephen is known for her contributions to Nollywood, particularly in romantic comedies and family dramas.
Some of her notable works include Breaded Life, Picture Perfect and Progressive Tailors Club.
