Actress Biola Adebayo has expressed her gratitude to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke after he ordered an immediate investigation and pardoning process for Segun Olowookere, a man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl.
Segun’s case gained public attention following an episode of Biola Adebayo’s podcast, which was shared on Tuesday.
His parents Folashade and Olanrewaju Olowookere narrated how their only son, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, has spent 14 years in jail after being accused of stealing a fowl and eggs.
Segun, who was said to be a medical student, received a death sentence despite pleas for clemency.
The distraught parents, alongside Biola Adebayo, appealed to Governor Adeleke to grant Segun amnesty.
In response, the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed issued a statement on Tuesday evening.
“I have received the report of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl.
“Consequently, I have directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Osun State, to conduct a full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant the young man a prerogative of mercy.
“Osun is a land of justice and equity, and we must ensure fairness and protect the sanctity of lives. I assure the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency,” The statement read.
The governor further assured that Segun would be listed for a prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.”
Biola, sharing a screenshot of the press statement, expressed her gratitude to the governor and called on Nigerians to join in prayers for him.
She wrote, “Pardon granted by His Excellency Governor Ademola Adeleke @aadeleke_01 💃💃💃💃 Thank you, Jesus! Thank you so much, sir.
“This means so much to us. May God continue to enrich you with more wisdom and good health. Please say a prayer for our dear Governor.”
