Spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force Muyiwa Adejobi has said that the alleged killers of Deborah Samuel are in the custody of the correctional centre.
Ms Samuel, who was studying home economics at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was stoned and burnt to death on May 12, 2022, by irate youths.
It was alleged that she refused to take down a post on social media deemed blasphemous of Prophet Muhammad.
Two suspects, Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, were arrested by the police and subsequently remanded.
In August 2022, spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command Sanusi Abubakar said those arrested and arraigned were not the prime suspects, but among those who organised the violent riot.
Abubakar said that “efforts are being intensified to arrest the prime suspects.”
However, when a tweep alleged on Twitter that no one had been arrested for Samuel’s death, Adejobi tweeted on Saturday, “They are in custody, Correctional Centre, under prosecution. Instead of him spreading falsehood that no one was arrested, he even said ‘not even a fly’ why can’t he make some contacts in sokoto, or NCoS to know how far about the suspects or the Min of Justice about the prosecution.”
It is now one year since the killing of Samuel. Her parents have since been relocated by a clergyman to Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
