The body of the former Senate President Joseph Wayas has arrived in Nigeria three years after his death.
Wayas died aged 80 in a London hospital on November 30, 2021, following a protracted ailment. His body had been in a morgue since then.
His remains were flown from Heathrow Airport, London via British Airways 083 and arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at 4:40 am on Wednesday.
Jarigbe Agom, Peter Akpanke, family, kinsmen and other stakeholders received the body and deposited it in the morgue at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Speaking with journalists, Jarigbe thanked Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu for facilitating the repatriation of the body, adding that he is confident that the governor will give the former elder statesman a befitting burial.
Dignitaries also proceeded to sign the condolence register at the deceased’s Asokoro residence in Abuja.
Other stakeholders and leaders in attendance include Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Mike Etaba, Ntufam Ugbo, Jonny Agim, and Cletus Obun.
Wayas was Senate President from October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983.
His first wife died 12 days after he passed on. She has since been buried.
