Award-winning filmmaker and producer Bolanle Austen-Peters has expressed her frustration over a massive traffic jam that left commuters stranded on Lagos’ roads.
On Wednesday, Lagos residents found themselves stuck in an unbearable traffic gridlock caused by construction work in the Lagos Island area.
The congestion, which affected the Third Mainland Bridge and parts of Lagos-Ikorodu Road, caught many off guard as they tried to resume their work and appointments after the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.
While the heavy rainfall that morning contributed to the delay, it was primarily the ongoing road construction that worsened the situation.
Commuters reported being trapped in traffic for over 10 hours.
Austen-Peters, 60, took to her X page on Thursday to share her thoughts. “Poor or rich, security cars or okada, everyone was humbled by yesterday’s traffic,” she wrote.
“I heard someone say, ‘Whether your car is worth 7 billion or not, we are all stuck together in this traffic.'”
She also highlighted the lack of pedestrian walkways, broken bridge rails and the accumulation of water puddles that forced people to navigate uncomfortable conditions.
“This is the reality of the average man. SMH… which way forward?” she questioned.
