Republican Donald Trump has been elected the 45th President of the United States of America after a stunning victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
“I’ve just received a call from Secretary Clinton. She congratulated us – it’s about us – on our victory and I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard-fought campaign,” Trump said.
“Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country. I mean that very sincerely.”
Outgoing President Barack Obama has congratulated Trump and has invited him to a meeting at the White House on Thursday to discuss the transition.
“It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people,” Trump told supporters.
There was no immediate public comment from Clinton, who did not appear at what was meant to be her victory rally in Manhattan.
