The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to the immediate past governor of Anambra State Willie Obiano following his arrest last Thursday.
EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa stated this on Monday while fielding questions from reporters at the fifth annual general assembly of the Network of National Anti-corruption institutions in West Africa (NACIWA).
Mr Bawa said the ex-governor was yet to meet his bail conditions.
Obiano was arrested on March 17 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while he was about to board a flight to Houston, Texas, US. The former governor is being investigated for alleged laundering of Sure-P and security vote funds.
Bawa dismissed allegations that Obiano’s arrest was political.
“Nothing political about the arrest of the former Anambra State governor, Wille Obiano. He has been granted bail. But we await (when) he fulfils his bail conditions,” he said.
Obiano’s arrest came hours after officially handing over to his successor Prof Charles Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
