Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly Funminiyi Afuye, who represented Ikere Constituency 1, has died at the age of 66.
Afuye died on Wednesday evening, Ekiti Deputy Speaker Hakeem Jamiu told The Nation.
He was at the inauguration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Sunday and also attended plenary on Tuesday.
He said: “It’s sad we have lost the Speaker. He died this evening. I can’t tell you more than that.”
Afuye was rushed to a hospital after suddenly developing complications over an undisclosed ailment, another lawmaker who did not want to be named said.
Afuye was first elected to the assembly in 2007 on the platform of the defunct Action Congress (AC). He rose to become majority leader. Afuye was re-elected to the assembly in 2019.
During his time away from the assembly, he was appointed to the cabinet of former governor Kayode Fayemi first as commissioner for information, and as commissioner for regional integration.
