The House of Representatives has approved a new date June 12 as democracy day.
The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on June 6 declared a new date to be celebrated as democracy day.
Prior to this, democracy day had always been celebrated on May 29.
There are divided opinions about the change.
Supporters of June 12 say that the day Moshood Abiola won the first free and fair election in Nigeria which was annulled by then military leader Ibrahim Babangida is best fitting for democracy day.
Proponents of May 29 however say that the day military head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar handed over power to a democratically elected president Olusegun Obasanjo should remain significant in the nation’s history.
Confirmation by the House now makes it a law.
