The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Wednesday announced the immediate suspension of the new minimum pricing template for data services by telecom operators.
It came a few hours after the Senate ordered a stop to the planned increase
The new rate, which would have led to price increase in data for some Nigerians, was scheduled to take effect from December 1.
The NCC had in a letter dated November 1, 2016 directed big telecoms operators to increase the floor price of data to 0.90k/MB effective December 1, 2016 “pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria”.
Bowing to the Senate the NCC said on Wednesday that the decision to suspend data price hike is to allow for further consultation.
