Obasa reinstated as Lagos Assembly speaker

Mudashiru Obasa

Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Obasa’s nomination was made by Noheem Adams of Eti-Osa Constituency 1 and seconded by Nureni Akinsanya of Mushin Constituency.

His return comes amid a leadership crisis that began in January when 32 lawmakers removed him and ex-Clerk Olalekan Onafeko.

Reacting to his impeachment, Obasa rejected the process, insisting that the lawmakers did not follow the constitutional procedure to remove him as speaker.

He also dismissed the allegations of corruption leveled against him, describing the claims of financial misappropriation as “impossible.”

“My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,” he said.

To resolve the leadership crisis, notable APC leaders, including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun) and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), intervened on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

Following a reconciliation meeting with all lawmakers on Monday, Meranda announced her resignation alongside other top principal officers.

“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she declared during plenary.

Obasa was subsequently reinstated as speaker. Addressing the lawmakers, he expressed gratitude and called for unity and cooperation in the House.
