Suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, has resigned his position with immediate effect.
Onnoghen turned in his resignation letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday evening, TheCable reports.
Prior to this, the National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended Onnoghen’s compulsory retirement to the president after an emergency meeting on Thursday.
The CJN’s resignation takes immediate effect as stipulated in section 306 of
Onnoghen is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over false and non-declaration of assets.
He had on Wednesday closed his defence at CCT after calling only one witness, his driver.
