Singer/songwriter, actress and broadcaster Onyeka Onwenu is dead.
The 72-year-old died at a hospital in Lagos on Tuesday after slumping at the 80th birthday party of industrialist Stella Okoli.
She reportedly slumped after performing at the event.
Online news medium thenicheng.com quoted an eyewitness as saying: “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she slumped. She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”
Ms Onwenu recently disclosed that she was working on a film project about her music career.
“I am currently working on a film that will chronicle my experiences in the music industry from the 70s to the present day. Having been a part of this narrative for decades, I have a wealth of stories to share,” she told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Apart from the movie project, Onwenu talked about her plans to collaborate with up-and-coming musicians to release her iconic songs. She also assured fans that later in the year, a compilation of rebranded songs would be released.
“I am rebranding my old songs and collaborating with new talents. My aim is to offer listeners a fresh perspective on timeless classics,” she added.
