World record holder Tobi Amusan has arrived in Nigeria following what has been the best season of her career.
Amusan touched down in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon and was warmly received.
Sports lovers and fans of Amusan turned out in their numbers to give her a well-deserved homecoming.
Amusan arrived in Nigeria wearing a black sleeveless top and a green pair of trousers.
The Ijebu-Ode-born star is Nigeria’s first-ever gold winner at the World Athletics Championship. Her impressive run began in September 2021 when she won her first Diamond League final trophy.
In June 2022, she won the African Championships title in 100m hurdles.
She topped it with a world record-breaking feat in July 2022 by running the 100m hurdles in 12:12 seconds at the semi-finals of the World Championships in Oregon, United States, and also won gold at the final.
Her tears on the podium while the Nigerian national anthem was being played caught the attention of Nigerians at home and abroad.
In August, Amusan also won gold and set a new Commonwealth Games record in Birmingham, UK.
The 25-year-old clocked 12.30 seconds to set a new Games record and retain the title she won in Gold Coast, Australia four years ago.
With her Jamaican coach Lacena Golding-Clarke offering valuable support, Amusan crowned her efforts with a win at the Diamond League final in Zurich, Switzerland on September 8.
Amusan clocked 12.29 seconds, breaking Gail Devers’ 22-year-old meeting record.
Amusan and others who represented Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games will be hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari on September 15 in Abuja.
Nigeria finished seventh on the medals table, also first in Africa at the Games with 35 medals, comprising 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
The likes of Ese Brume, Odunayo Adekuoroye, and Blessing Oborududu are expected to be part of the team to be hosted by the president.
