Bricklayer remanded for ‘killing’ sex worker in Kwara

Prison

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court has ordered the detention of a bricklayer, Sodiq Kazeem, who allegedly murdered a commercial sex worker, Yemisi Adekoya.

Magistrate Mary Bamidele ruled on Monday that the suspect be remanded in Mandala Prison, Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

Mr Kazeem has denied two-count charges of culpable homicide and stealing.

Police prosecutor, Rodah Kayode, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 30 at Coca Cola area of Ilorin.

The court heard that the defendant was arrested at the scene of the crime while attempting to flee with a stolen hotel wall fan.

The bricklayer was said to have engaged the sex worker in a fight after refusing to pay N2,500 which they had initially agreed.

“He claimed he could only afford N2000 after the sexual intercourse,” the prosecutor said.

Kayode said the defendant attacked the victim and hit her head on the wall which ultimately led to her death.

The offence contravened the provisions of sections 221 and 287 of the Penal Code Law, the prosecutor said.

The case was adjourned until June 28 for mention.
