President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, for a second term.
Buhari signed the letter for tenure renewal on Wednesday.
Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday read the presidential communication seeking the confirmation of Emefiele for another term of five years.
Emefiele was group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc before his appointment in 2014 by former president Goodluck Jonathan.
He was kept in office after Buhari took office in 2015.
The Senate would be expected to either confirm or reject the nomination.
This is the first time since 1999 that anyone would be nominated to serve two terms as CBN governor.
If confirmed by the Senate, Emefiele’s five-year tenure will end in 2024, one year after a new president is elected in 2023.
