President Muhammadu Buhari has taken his oath of office for a second term, vowing once again to tackle insecurity and root out corruption.
Mr Buhari was sworn in on Wednesday at Eagles Square, Abuja in what officials called a “low-key” ceremony.
“I do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Buhari said, dressed in white babaringa and traditional embroidered cap.
“I will preserve, protect and defend the constitution,” he said, accompanied by his wife, Aisha.
The 76-year-old arrived at Eagles Square packed with dignitaries and military guard of honour at about 10 am in red-carpet reception flanked by bagpipers.
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo also took his oath of office in the company of his wife, Dolapo.
Buhari was re-elected with 56 percent of the vote, defeating his main rival, Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came second with 41 percent of the vote.
Buhari’s victory at the polls is being challenged by PDP and a few other political parties at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
The President begins a final four-year term beset with crawling economy, Boko Haram insurgency, rise in kidnapping, among others.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and other top government officials were at the inauguration.
Former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, was a notable figure at the ceremony.
