Yusuf Buhari, son of President Muhammadu Buhari, and his bride-to-be Princess Zahra Ado-Bayero on Wednesday night held their Kamu ceremony at the palace of the emir of Bichi Nasir Ado-Bayero.
Kamu means ‘catch the bride’ and it is one of the oldest and most interesting events in the Hausa wedding tradition. To get the bride, the groom’s family negotiates with the bride’s friends for her release to them. The fun-filled negotiation is usually followed by a mini-reception.
Relatives and friends of the couple attended the ceremony which began at 7pm. In videos posted on Instagram by publisher Dele Momodu, the women are seen singing as they usher in Zahra for the ceremony. Pictures were taken with the emir and his daughter. Yusuf’s sister Zahra Buhari-Indimi was also spotted at the ceremony.
The intending couple released their pre-wedding pictures on Wednesday, August 18 to the public ahead of their wedding on Friday, August 20.
The duo will be joined in holy matrimony in Bichi town, Kano. Buhari is expected to lead the nation’s who’s who to the wedding fatiha.
Some state governors had earlier visited the elder brother of the bride’s father who is the emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero to formalise plans.
In late July, the intending couple held a polo tournament in preparation for what is expected to be the wedding of the year.
Those who graced the polo tournament include the couple’s relatives, friends and the daughter of Bauchi State governor Fatima Zahra Bala and her husband.
Yusuf, the only male child of the president, met Zahra at the University of Surrey in the UK. Zahra was studying architecture at the time.
Aside from the wedding, Ado-Bayero will be coronated as the new emir of Bichi. He will receive his staff of office from Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
