Veteran Nollywood producer, Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, has advised the Federal Government to build cinemas in each local government in the country to curb piracy.

Ogunjiofor, an award winner from the Legends of Nollywood, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos with that approach, piracy would be minimized in the country as done developed countries.

He said that newly released movies could be shown at cinemas in local government areas for the public for a fee before pirates would start pirating them.

“The Federal Government must build at least a cinema house in each local government to start with, to curb the excesses of the pirates.’’

The movie producer said that with the rate pirates had hindered producers from getting returns on their investments; availability of cinemas at local government levels had become very important.

“Government will generate huge revenue from this, likewise the producers and everyone in the movie production value chain,” he said.

Ogunjiofor said that developed countries like China and India were also suffering from piracy before but had minimized such problems by showing their movies at their cinemas first.

He also suggested that communities could also embark in building community viewing centres to minimize the cost of building cinemas across the country.

“To minimize cost, community viewing centres can also be constructed where people can watch movies,” he said.

NAN reports that the Legends of Nollywood is an award given to recognize and honour individuals who had shaped the Nigerian movie industry.

Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, the producer of Living in Bondage, was recognised as the Best Male Actor in the movie Nneka, the Pretty Serpent produced in 1994.
