Canada dismisses Dele Momodu’s post on immigrants

The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria has dismissed a report shared by the publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu.

The false report claims that the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was asking President Muhammadu Buhari for one million immigrants to the North American country under a new employment and migration programme.

Mr Momodu had shared the post via Twitter on Monday.

“Canada’s Prime Minister begs Nigeria President for one million immigrants,” he wrote.

The Canadian commission dismissed the information in a response to his tweet, writing: “This particular story is FALSE.  Nigerians are welcome to apply to immigrate to Canada.  For the real information on how to apply, go to http://www.cic.gc.ca.”

In another tweet, they dismissed a similar report, writing: “If you’ve seen this link on your social media timeline, don’t fall for it.  This story is not true.  For REAL information about travelling to Canada, go to http://www.cic.gc.ca .”

Dele Momodu had shared a picture of his son, Eniafe, meeting Rotimi Amaechi earlier in March.

He was criticised by Twitter users for advising the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to concede defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the wake of the elections.

Mr Momodu was one of the most vocal supporters of Atiku Abubakar’s presidential bid.

The advice to concede was interpreted by many as the media mogul attempting to realign his political ties.
