Entertainer and activist, Charly Boy, on Thursday led a protest to the Police headquarters in Abuja to demand the release of detained PREMIUM TIMES journalist, Samuel Ogundipe.
Using the hashtag #OurMumuDondo, the protesters insisted on the release of the reporter, noting that they would not leave until he is freed.
The activists briefly barricaded the Shehu Shagari Way, forcing motorists to ply alternative routes.
Presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, berated the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for pressurising Ogundipe to disclose his source.
Some Nigerians also took to Twitter to air their frustration at the detention of the journalist.
My head is full. I haven’t been able to concentrate since “overhauled” SARS picked Samuel up. This regime will do anything to stifle free speech. @PoliceNG arraigned a journalist secretly without disclosing his occupation. #FreeSamuelOgundipeNOW

It’s my duty as a journalist to keep my sources undisclosed no matter what. Journalism is global practices and our govt should see how it’s been practiced in on other climes.#FreeSamuelOgundipeNOW #FreeSamuelOgundipe@segalink @ChidiOdinkalu @Bhadoosky @OgbeniDipo @DrJoeAbah pic.twitter.com/c1rfpY0qOD

The illegal detention of Samuel Ogundipe and recent appointment of @HMKemiAdeosun despite her lingering case of forgery as a board chairperson of NBET automatically burst the propaganda bubble that @ProfOsinbajo is better off than PMB #FreeSamuelOgundipeNOW

We used to joke about this thing before – that a person might tweet something the govt doesn’t like & we will need to trend hashtags to help secure the person’s freedom. It is no longer a joke. This is not a drill #FreeSamuelOgundipeNOW

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) have also demanded the immediate release of the journalist.
Ogundipe was secretly arraigned by the police at a Magistrate Court in Kubwa on Wednesday over allegation of criminal trespass and theft of police document.
