Branislav Ivanovic’s extra-time winner against Liverpool on Tuesday not only secured Chelsea’s place in the Capital One Cup final, but also helped the Blues go seven straight games without losing to the Reds for the first time in their 110-year history.
According to a statistic tweeted by Mister Chiping during the semi-final second-leg at Stamford Bridge, the Blues had never gone so many consecutive games without being beaten by Liverpool since 1905.
However, Ivanovic’s header from Willian’s free-kick – three minutes into extra time – ensured Chelsea broke that run and secured their place in the League Cup final at Wembley.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who missed the decisive goal as he was in a heated debate with fourth official Phil Dowd, showed how much another trip to Wembley meant to him by celebrating wildly with his staff at the final whistle.
The Portuguese manager remains on course for his first piece of silverware since returning to Chelsea at the start of last season while the club are looking for a first trophy since the 2013 Europa League triumph under Rafa Benitez.
Chelsea will face either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United in the Capital One Cup final in Wembley on March 1.
