A High Court sitting in Ibadan on Thursday granted a N50 million bail to Olafisoye Akinmoyede, Chief Whip of Oyo State House of Assembly, over the murder of an Oyo lawmaker, Temitope Olatoye.
Mr Olatoye, popularly known as sugar, was the House of Representatives member for Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency.
Olatoye was killed by gunmen during the governorship and State House of Assembly elections on March 9.
Justice Mashud Abass ruled that the chief whip must produce two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a civil servant not below GL14 or member of the state House or National Assembly members.
He also ordered that the second surety must be a blood relation with landed property worthy N50 million.
Akinmoyede, through his counsel, Michael Lana, had filed an enforcement of fundamental human rights suit against the police for detaining his client since March 11, without charging him to court.
The judge said that the “practice of the police making arrests before investigation is not proper.
“The remand order obtained by the police from an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court expired on April 4 and detaining the applicant beyond this period is fragrant disobedience to the constitution.”
