A Chinese trader, Mike Zhang, has been given a chieftaincy title in Kano State.
His new title as ‘Wakilin Yan China’ makes him the recognised leader of Chinese people in Kano’s emirate.
Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, dressed Mr Zhang up in a ceremony on Thursday at his palace to mark his new status.
The chieftaincy title marks the growing importance of the Chinese community in Kano.
Reports say there are about 5,000 Chinese in the city, many of whom are businesspeople.
Zhang, who was clothed in traditional Hausa robes and headgear, said in Hausa: “I will work towards strengthening the relationship between the people of Kano and the people of our country, China.”
He will also take part in official activities in the emirate, one of which is the famous horse riding festival.
